Please note that due to the nature of the role, this is a hybrid role, 3 days onsite, 2 days remote.
Lead the development of Agilent's next generation automation hardware platforms, enabling integrated, interoperable, and automation workflows that accelerate scientific productivity.
The R&D Hardware Manager leads the development, delivery, and lifecycle management of automation hardware platforms within Agilent's Automated Productivity Solutions (APS) business. This leader is responsible for building industry-leading automation solutions that improve laboratory productivity.
The role oversees multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for mechanical, electrical, fluidics, motion control, and systems engineering. The Hardware Manager drives product innovation, platform modernization, strategic technology investments, and execution of new product development programs across sample preparation, liquid handling and workflow automation.
Key Responsibilities
Hardware Strategy and Portfolio Leadership
• Execute on the APS hardware technology roadmap aligned with business growth objectives.
• Lead the evolution of Agilent's automation hardware platforms, including liquid handling, sample preparation, plate handling, and integrated automation workcells.
• Identify emerging technologies, market trends, and customer needs that inform future product investments.
• Partner with Product Management to translate customer workflow requirements into differentiated hardware solutions.
• Partner with Services organization to ensure serviceability of our solutions.
Product Development and Execution
• Lead end-to-end hardware development programs from concept through commercialization.
• Drive execution of new platform developments, platform modernization efforts, and product enhancements.
• Ensure projects meet cost, quality, schedule, and performance objectives.
• Establish engineering best practices for design reviews, risk management, and product verification.
• Manage technical tradeoff decisions and portfolio prioritization.
Engineering Leadership
• Build and lead a high-performing global engineering organization.
• Develop technical talent and succession pipelines.
• Establish a culture of innovation, accountability, execution excellence, and customer focus.
• Drive collaboration across R&D, Product Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Commercial organizations.
Manufacturing and Lifecycle Management
• Partner with Operations to ensure product manufacturability, reliability, scalability, and cost competitiveness.
• Drive product cost reduction and margin improvement initiatives.
• Support sustaining engineering, obsolescence management, and long-term product lifecycle planning.
• Ensure successful transfer of new products into production.
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Bioengineering, or related discipline.
10+ years of experience in hardware product development.
3+ years leading engineering organizations and multidisciplinary teams.
Proven experience delivering complex automation systems from concept to commercialization.
Strong understanding of product development processes and engineering governance.
Demonstrated ability to lead global, cross-functional programs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with laboratory automation systems, robotics, liquid handling, or analytical instrumentation.
Expertise in electromechanical system design and integration.
Knowledge of motion control, robotics, sensors, fluidics, and automation architectures.
Track record in modular design and component reusability.
Experience developing products for regulated scientific environments.
Experience with Model Based System Engineering and simulation tools.
Familiarity with (incremental) software-enabled hardware platforms and connected laboratory systems.
Knowledge of AI-enabled automation and autonomous laboratory technologies.

The full-time equivalent pay range for this position is $180,000.00 - $281,250.00/yr plus eligibility for bonus, stock and benefits. Our pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
