Job Description
What if the work you did every day could impact the lives of people you know? Or all of humanity?
At Illumina, we are expanding access to genomic technology to realize health equity for billions of people around the world. Our efforts enable life-changing discoveries that are transforming human health through the early detection and diagnosis of diseases and new treatment options for patients.
Working at Illumina means being part of something bigger than yourself. Every person, in every role, has the opportunity to make a difference. Surrounded by extraordinary people, inspiring leaders, and world changing projects, you will do more and become more than you ever thought possible.
You are the engineer Illumina is looking for. In your future role at the Madison site of the global leader in genetic sequencing, you will be part of the Engineering Services team providing process-focused engineering support for the equipment and systems producing the enzymes that fuel Illumina’s sequencing and array-based solutions. You will drive process performance through process development and design, data-driven troubleshooting, process capability assessment, yield improvement, scalable equipment solutions, process control strategy, and product and technical transfer from development through manufacturing implementation. You will support fermentation vessels, purification systems, heat treatment equipment, solids conveyance, centrifuges, chromatography instruments, cold storage, analytical equipment, and emerging platform projects. You will contribute to a self-directed, diverse team by improving process capabilities, strengthening equipment reliability, enabling scale-up readiness, and applying statistical and engineering methods to sustain control. We want your curiosity, creative problem solving, communication confidence, and drive to execute.
Responsibilities:
Partner with cross-functional teams and vendors to support the design, troubleshooting, and improvement of manufacturing and laboratory systems, including fermentation, purification, PHT, solids conveyance, centrifugation, chromatography, cold storage, and analytical equipment.
Apply process engineering principles to develop, optimize, and scale manufacturing processes and equipment using lean, Six Sigma, JMP, advanced Excel analytics, regression, DOE, statistical process control, and other data-driven methods.
Use statistical analysis and engineering judgment to evaluate process performance, identify risks, improve efficiency, strengthen business continuity, and recommend maintenance, CIP, spare parts, and reliability strategies for critical manufacturing systems.
Write, review, and manage engineering reports, protocols, user requirement specifications, maintenance work instructions, and technical documentation that support process design, equipment qualification, process control, and scale-up decisions.
Incorporate quality, validation, and regulatory compliance requirements into system design, process engineering, equipment support, and continuous improvement activities.
Develop specifications, feasibility assessments, and supporting engineering documents for scalable equipment layouts, system design, process design, qualification, and project implementation.
Lead and contribute to cross-functional projects that align local, national, and international teams on process strategy, scale-up needs, equipment capability, and data-driven process improvement.
Serve as a visible technical resource by mentoring supporting engineers, communicating process and system design recommendations clearly, and contributing to team culture through ownership and collaborative problem solving.
Requirements:
B.S. degree in Engineering or equivalent technical training/experience
2+ years relevant engineering experience.
Demonstrated ownership of complex, ambiguous technical work, including independent execution, high-quality documentation, and follow-through on cross-functional engineering commitments.
Experience or interest in applying statistical tools, advanced Excel analytics, JMP, regression, DOE, and statistical process control to engineering reports, business cases, and process improvement decisions.
Desire to grow toward a Senior Engineer role by leading complex cross-functional projects from concept through implementation, deepening unit operations expertise, mentoring others, and strengthening operator collaboration.
The estimated base salary range for the Process Engineer II role based in the United States of America is: $76,500 - $114,700. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. The range reflects long‑term growth in the role; therefore, most candidates are hired between the minimum and middle of the range.
