Job Description
OUR MISSION
At SPAN, we are building products to enable the rapid adoption of renewable energy. As more distributed energy resources like solar and storage come onto the grid, it’s increasingly important to be able to improve the technology that sits between the grid, the home, and those distributed energy resources. SPAN’s smart panel replaces the electrical panel to become the center for connected power in the home. With SPAN, homeowners receive all the safety features of a standard panel with revolutionary insights and edge-of-grid controls through our mobile app.
THE ROLE
The Span engineering team is made of experienced, passionate people with expertise in electronics, mechanical design, energy systems, and embedded software. We are seeking a passionate electrical engineering student to join the hardware development team of SPAN. As an electrical engineering intern, you will apply your knowledge of electrical and PCB design and manufacturing processes to assist Span’s hardware design, testing, and manufacturing efforts.
The engineering challenges we face at Span apply to various industries, with engineering challenges similar to climate tech, consumer electronics, and construction industries. Compared to other climate tech companies, Span offers the ability to work on a project that is out of the “science phase” and in the engineering execution phase, so you will be working to deliver from prototype to product.
IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Create electrical prototypes and own them from concept, design, manufacturing, and testing.
- Create schematics and layouts for these electrical designs in Altium.
- Interface with cross-functional teams such as mechanical engineering, software engineering, firmware engineering, and products to define requirements.
- Read datasheets and analyze electrical component specifications for part selection.
- Build prototype components and assemblies and perform tests related to compliance, environmental, and reliability with appropriate documentation for the same.
ABOUT YOU
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking an electrical engineer who is:
- Working towards a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experienced analog and digital circuit design.
- Hands-on experience with mixed signal circuit design, including test and simulations.
- PCBA design in Altium, KiCAD or other eCAD software.
- Experience with high-level coding languages such as Python for scripting or data analysis.
- Hands-on approach, whether it be building a prototype or performing testing.
- Excited about digging into complex problems and seeing them through to solutions.
- Passionate about renewable energy and energy storage!
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS
We would love to hire someone who has:
- Experience designing for solar or renewable energy applications.
- Experience writing or interfacing with low-level languages in a device firmware context.
- Experience writing and analyzing design documentation.
The Internship position has a duration of 12 weeks and will run from June 16th- September 4th, 2026. Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, and have not graduated prior to end of the Internship term.
The hourly rate for this role is $32/ hour for undergrad students, and $35/hr for Masters or PhD students.
Please note that we are unable to sponsor employment visas now or in the future.
