Job Description
This Counsel role offers the opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping RiverSource Life Insurance products across their full lifecycle—from early concept and development through launch and long term administration. As a trusted legal advisor, you’ll partner closely with cross functional product, underwriting, new business and operations teams to help bring thoughtful, compliant, and competitive insurance solutions to market.
In this role, you’ll translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, practical guidance that supports informed decision making and product strategy. By balancing innovation with effective risk management, you’ll help teams move forward with confidence while supporting new business initiatives and in force policy administration.
Key Responsibilities
This role will support:
Life Product Development by drafting, reviewing, and finalizing contracts and prospectuses that support the sale of individual life insurance products.
Filing strategies to drive timely state and federal regulatory approvals for new contracts and prospectuses, including the response and effective resolution to regulatory objections.
New Business, Underwriting and Service and Operations business units by researching laws and providing guidance.
Required Qualifications
Law Degree from an Accredited Law School with at least 7 years of experience as a practicing lawyer.
At least 3- 5 years of experience working for a life insurance company, an insurance regulatory agency or an insurance practice group within a law firm.
Solid experience working with, and knowledge of, state insurance and securities laws and requirements applicable to a life insurance company.
Ability to influence, gain credibility and develop strong working relationships with business partners and external constituencies.
Ability to organize, plan, manage and implement large and ongoing projects, with competing priorities and deadlines.
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to draft and interpret sophisticated agreements and plans.
Highly organized with ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams.
Ability to communicate results to appropriate audiences and suggest risk assessed alternative courses of action.
Ability to monitor and analyze developments and trends in areas of responsibility and master new bodies of legal knowledge as regulations and business objectives evolve.
Admitted to practice law in the state of Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina or eligible for admission as in-house counsel.
Willing to work in the office 4 days a week at one of our home offices: Minnesota, Massachusetts, New York or North Carolina.

Our employees work in the office at least four (4) days per week, with flexibility to work from home one (1) day per week. Some roles may require additional in-office time or different in-office expectations, and specific requirements will be discussed during the hiring process.

Base Pay Salary
The estimated base salary for this role is $110,200 - $193,500 / year. We have a pay-for-performance compensation philosophy. Your initial total compensation may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and geographical work location. In addition, most of our roles are eligible for variable pay in the form of bonus, commissions, and/or long-term incentives depending on the role.
