Job Description
Thermo Fisher Scientific's Ion Chromatography and Sample Preparation (ICSP) team is seeking a Hardware Test Engineer III to support validation and performance of next-generation ion chromatography laboratory instruments.
This role is part of a strategic NPI (New Product Introduction) initiative focused on developing a new generation platform for chromatographic instruments. This is not about maintaining or incrementally improving existing solutions, but a complete redesign of a system currently built on approximately 15-year-old electronics.
The goal is to create a modern, scalable platform by leveraging new technologies to significantly improve performance, functionality, and overall system architecture. The work involves validating complex analytical instrumentation systems that combine advanced hardware, embedded software, and domain-specific capabilities.
This is a multi-year program, offering long-term stability and the opportunity to contribute across multiple phases of development—from early validation through to commercialization and sustaining engineering.
What will you do?
You will lead hardware and system-level testing, ensuring product performance, reliability, and compliance across development and sustaining phases.
Test Strategy & Execution
Define and execute hardware and system-level test strategies for NPI and sustaining projects
Design, document, and maintain structured test methodologies and plans
Develop and improve test automation and data analysis approaches
Debugging, Analysis & Problem Solving
Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex product issues across hardware and system levels
Perform root cause analysis and drive resolution with cross-functional teams
Support field investigations, including debug of returned material (RMA)
System Integration & Collaboration
Collaborate with hardware, software, systems, and quality teams to improve product performance and resolve ambiguities
Provide technical support for instrument operation and system interactions
Influence test strategies and technical decisions across teams and stakeholders
Test Infrastructure & Environment
Build, qualify, and maintain test environments and laboratory setups
Administer test systems, including data storage, databases, and infrastructure
Install, configure, and maintain instrumentation and test equipment
Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
Ensure alignment with quality, regulatory, and documentation requirements
Contribute to continuous improvement of test processes, tools, and methodologies
Utilize enterprise systems (e.g., ERP, PLM) to support engineering and compliance processes
Technical Leadership & Support
Mentor junior engineers and support onboarding and knowledge sharing
Coordinate materials, tools, and resources required for testing activities
Innovation & Productivity
Leverage modern tools, including AI-assisted analysis and testing, to improve efficiency and insight generation
Qualifications & Skills
Degree in relevant scientific field (e.g., Chemistry, Physics); MS preferred
Experience in hardware or system-level test engineering within complex product environments
Experience with analytical instrumentation or electromechanical systems preferred (e.g., IC, HPLC, MS)
Strong understanding of test methodologies, validation, and structured problem-solving approaches
Proven ability to debug complex systems across hardware, software, and system interactions
Experience with test automation, data analysis, and engineering tools
Familiarity with enterprise systems (e.g., ERP, PLM, document control)
Experience supporting both new product development and sustaining engineering
Strong leadership skills with ability to drive test activities and influence cross-functional teams
Strong communication skills in English, including documentation and stakeholder reporting
Interest in leveraging AI-assisted tools to enhance testing efficiency and quality
